Vendors Simon and Yolande purchased the home in 2001 and extensively renovated it over two years.

“We stripped the inside and replaced flooring, ceiling, wiring, plumbing, foundations and digging the wine cellar below the garage,” Simon said.

The expansive basement cellar was custom-designed with Western red cedar racking for thousands of bottles.

Simon said he enjoyed collecting and learning about wine and had visited wine regions around Australia and the world.

“Every bottle in that cellar tells the story of where it comes from and the climate and location and the work that goes into making wine that is enjoyable to drink,” he said.

Yolande added that, most importantly, they loved sharing wine with their friends.

Simon said the abode had a lot of depth, lovely high ceilings and space.

David Neil, of Neil Architecture, helped renovate the home which was built in about 1885 by architect James Wood, who also designed the Glenferrie Hotel.

The residence has a large main bedroom with a balcony, walk-in robe, ensuite with heated floors and towel rail, a double shower and separate toilet.

In the provincial-style kitchen, there are Miele pyrolytic ovens, a steam oven, a cooktop and dishwasher as well as Corian countertops, an island bench, pantry, and handpainted tiles.

Landscaped gardens and an entertaining area are at the rear, with a gas-mains barbecue and wood pizza oven made from reclaimed Hawthorn bricks, as is the double-storey garage.

The couple is moving into another Victorian terrace pad in East Melbourne which they are redesigning.

Yolande said while they were looking forward to their next chapter, Hawthorn had been an extraordinary area for family life.

“The sense of community here is really lovely and it’s a very relaxed vibe,” she said.

Kay & Burton Boroondara agent Danielle Balloch said beyond the beautiful, huge fence was one of the best terraces she had seen.

“This is just next level; from the quality finishes to every single bit of detail,” Ms Balloch said.

She added that the home is in a great, sought after location bordering Grace Park.

She expected the terrace to garner interest from professional couples, with children, or with children in mind.

“Someone who likes a really substantial size home that doesn’t have all the work (of a big) garden; it’s very low maintenance,” she said.
