A "spectacular” mid-century house that has been lovingly restored in one of Melbourne’s leafiest pockets is heading to auction next month.

The late architect J. Dale Fisher originally designed the 1970s sanctuary at 97 Yarrbat Avenue, which sits on a vast 2,011sqm block in Balwyn in Melbourne's east.

Kay & Burton Boroondara real estate agent Sam Wilkinson told realestate.com.au that the owners, architect David Neil and his wife Vanessa, were careful when renovating the home.

“When our owners purchased it some years ago, it was fairly rundown and they’ve totally reinvented it with a stunning yet sympathetic enhancement of the home,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“It’s spectacular in that it has a very modern feel but it’s very sympathetic to the original character and era of the home.”

The property comes with six bedrooms and an array of gorgeous indoor and outdoor living spaces that have been meticulously finished with original Black Bean panels and polished concrete flooring.

It features a Stovax wood fireplace adjoining its updated kitchen, which offers top-line V-ZUG induction, steam and combi-air appliances.

“The house itself is stunning but what’s quite overwhelming are the native gardens,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“The house is in a private location and when you enter the property, it’s like a hidden oasis with mature gardens, a swimming pool, alfresco area and the tennis court across the rear of the property.

“It’s your own little piece of paradise.”

Mr Wilkinson said the home would be ideal for a growing or larger family, given the abundance of accommodation and its proximity to leading schools and other amenities.

“It’s likely to appeal to lovers of that modernist architecture and someone who wants a sizeable landholding,” he said.

“But I think it will have broad market appeal, it’s a beautiful home and it’s already attracting solid enquiry and quite a lot of positive commentary, so I’m expecting it to be a popular house.”

The home is going to private auction on 11 May, with a price guide of $5.7 million to $6 million.
