The Palm Springs-inspired Springfield home of one of SA’s best-loved chocolate makers has hit the market, giving you the opportunity to live in a world of pure imagination – assuming you have a spare $3.25m to $3.5m, that is.

Commissioned by the late John Douglas Haigh – of Haigh’s Chocolates fame – with the brief being to capture the essence of Los Angeles lifestyle homes in the Hollywood Hills, his daughter, who did not wish to be named, said her father was hugely inspired by the Rat Pack era of the 1950s and ’60s.

“When we were clearing out the house we found a book with magazine cuttings from the 1950s that clearly served as the inspiration for the home, and it was very much that Palm Springs, cool 1950s vibe – that was the look they were after,” she said.

“My father loved Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and all of those crooners – they had this lovely aura about them and that was perhaps something he was channelling.

“It has been a wonderful family home and he was very proud of it.

“My father was very meticulous and he knew every inch of that property and had a large influence in the actual design and the footings – there are just no cracks, so he built that home to last.”

Sitting on a 1948sqm allotment and with numerous indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, including a swimming pool and a tennis court, Mr Haigh’s daughter says the 9 Woodland Rd home played host to many a social gathering.

“Sunday nights were really special to Dad and we’d all get together for dinner,” she said.

“He had tennis there twice a week on the court, and he would have this group of about 20 men that played – for sheep stations – right up until when he was 90.

“It was sort of like his own mens’ club.”

With Mr Haigh passing away last February, and the family having no need for the property, the time has come to sell, his daughter says.

“I’d love to see another family buy it because it really deserves to be loved and enjoyed like we have for all these years,” she said.

The property is on the market through Jamie Brown of Booth Real Estate with offers closing Tuesday, May 7.
