Australia's peak design and planning bodies say they want oversight over the 2032 Olympic Games before it's "too late" to make wise planning decisions.
The nation's top architecture, landscape, planning, and design institutes are lobbying the government to create a Design and Coordination Unit for the Brisbane Games.
The calls come after heated disagreements at all levels of government over the design and planning of the Gabba Stadium, the Redland Whitewater Centre, and other Olympic venues.
The group is made up of the Design Institute of Australia, Planning Institute of Australia, Australian Institute of Architects, and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture.
The newly formed collective claims to represent 26,000 professionals nationally.
Landscape architect and group spokesperson Tessa Leggo said there was frustration within the community because of the repeated "chopping and changing" of plans.
Ms Leggo said there were urban planners involved in individual Olympics projects but there was no overarching body to ensure cohesive design.
She said their model would be similar to the one established for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
However she said time was short because the Queensland government was due to establish its new independent Games Authority by mid-year.
She said her group wanted the Design and Coordination Unit to be launched around the same time as the Games Authority.
"We've definitely got time, but it needs to be done now," she said.
"It's absolutely imperative, we need to have a group that has the oversight and the ability to have the long overarching design view.
"This is going to be the first Olympics that's not one village, one central thing, so it becomes so important to make sure we're connected."
This week the group published its Green Pathways Gold Places plan for a "green grid", which would be a connected network of walkable open spaces.
Planning Institute Australia Queensland president Sean Cullen said it was important to design the Games in a way that benefited residents after the athletes had left.
"Ensuring the community benefits from tangible, positive change – like enhanced connectivity, investing in a green grid, and a step-change in place governance – will be vital to building and maintaining confidence and trust in the lead up to the Games," Mr Cullen said.
Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture Queensland vice-president Glen Power said Brisbane's venues needed to be interconnected if they were to have any lasting benefits.
"[Their] legacy relies on quality urban and landscape design across the precincts and in the connections between them," he said.
"This stitching together is critical and should be viewed as a strategic investment rather than a cost."
A Queensland government spokesperson said the government would consider the recommendations tabled in the Green Pathways and Gold Places report.
The spokesperson said the government contracted a range of architects and designers for planning Olympic venue projects.
"This includes experienced firms such as AECOM, Blight Rayner, Cox Architecture, Populous and Richard Kirk Architecture," the spokesperson said.
