Latest developments follow Israel's war cabinet unanimously deciding to continue a planned operation in Rafah despite Hamas accepting a proposal for a ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Egypt.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued a statement about two hours after Hamas' announcement, saying the deal the group had agreed to was "far from" its "necessary requirements".

The Israeli military then announced it was conducting airstrikes in eastern Rafah.

Rafah is a city in southern Gaza where more than 1 million Palestinian civilians have been sheltering since early in the war.

Yesterday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) advised civilians in areas of eastern Rafah to move to what it called a "new humanitarian area", estimating about 100,000 people needed to evacuate.

Palestinians told Reuters families did not know where to go.
