Mr Vella said many interested buyers had plans to continue using the property as a short-term rental.

“We’re getting a mix of enquiries,” he said. “Some people are looking to do that and some people are just looking for the space.”

PropTrack analysis of ABS data shows Australia has more than 12 million spare bedrooms, the majority of which are in our largest capital cities.

In Sydney, there are almost 600,000 houses with one spare bedroom, and 1.46 million houses with at least two spare bedrooms.

Across Australia, more than 70% of households have at least one spare bedroom.
