Emergency services are at the scene of a crash involving a police car in the southbound lanes of the M1 motorway near Helensvale on the Gold Coast.

Firefighters worked to free a person trapped in the police car after being called to the scene at 1.20pm Friday.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said four people were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

The spokesperson said a woman in her 50s along with two girls were being treated for injuries to their faces and legs.

A man, also in his 50s, was treated for chest and abdominal injuries.

The spokesperson said all patients were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two southbound lanes are closed and motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
