Two of Adelaide’s holiday hotspots have made Airbnb’s most popular destinations nationally, new research has shown.

The popular short-term rental platform has revealed the suburbs that have seen the greatest increase in searches during the year’s third quarter – from June to August – for stays between November 1 and December 31.

One of them you might be able to guess, but the other may come as a surprise.

According to the site, North Adelaide had the nation’s fourth biggest jump for searches for November and December in the quarter.

When you look at what’s luring holiday-makers to North Adelaide during this period, the answer is pretty clear – cricket.

Adelaide Oval, just a short walk from the city fringe hotspot, last week hosted the second test of the Australia v India Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which the Aussies won by 10 wickets.

Then there are several upcoming games of the Big Bash League, including a New Year’s Eve spectacular between the Adelaide Strikers and the Perth Scorchers.

Among the properties available for this weekend – from December 14 to 16 – is a five-star rated two-bedroom 1890s residence, which will sleep four and set you back $750.95 all up.

Susan Wheeldon, Country Manager for Airbnb, Australia and New Zealand said North Adelaide ticked holiday-makers’ boxes for a number of reasons.

“City escapes and coastal getaways continued to be popular holiday destinations with Aussie travellers this year with people taking advantage of a city stay and road trips to cut down on travel costs,” she said

“Major events continue to attract people to our two biggest cities with Sydney offering the world-famous fireworks for New Year’s Eve, while sports fans are heading to Melbourne for big events such as the Boxing Day Test and Australian Open.”

And Langhorne Creek?

That surge coincided with the wine region’s Handpicked festival, in which more than 6000 people flocked to Lake Breeze Wines the Felurieu Peninsula to listen to see artists like Angus and Julia Stone, The Jungle Giants, Matt Corby, Pete Murray, The Dreggs, Cryil, Coterie and Azure Ryder.

Among the properties available for this weekend – from December 14 to 16 – is the 4.99-star rated two-bedroom Alice’s Bed and Breakfast, which will sleep six and set you back $508.33 all up.

Alexandrina Council mayor Keith Parkes said events like Handpicked were a boon for the local area.

“It’s huge for local towns – everything is booked out when you have an event like that,” he said.

“A lot of these people will stay on for a few extra days or a half a week and really spend time exploring the region.

“It has a huge flow-on effect to local business and everyone wins.”

The three suburbs with the biggest search increase for the period were Jervis Bay, Jervis Bay

Territory, Ascot Vale, Victoria, and Yarraville, Victoria.
