As a fashion-obsessed teenager, one of my all-time favourite fantasy movie scenes was watching Cher Horowitz (aka Alicia Silverstone) operating her computerised wardrobe in the 1995 film  Clueless.

Fast-forward 20-plus years and while my closet still looks very analogue - I mean, where are the tidying robots we were promised in the 1980s? - one of the teen film's strongest fashion trends is squarely in the frame this winter.

I'm talking about tartan, a sub-trend of the broader punk movement made popular during the 1970s thanks to the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, as well as later exponents inlcuding the late Alexander McQueen. After all, who can forget McQueen arriving at the Met Gala in 2006 with Sarah Jessica Parker in matching tartan ensembles?

Of course, you will have to go back, as far back as 16th-century Scotland, to find tartan's early origins, or at least as the fabric we know today. Through history, the various prints have been used to denote people coming from different regions, while more recently, patterns have been associated with different clans.
