A historic Beverly Hills mansion restored by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston when they were still a couple has come up for sale at US$56 million ($78 million).

The estate designed by Hollywood architect Wallace Neff adjoins a property purchased by Aussie billionaire James Packer for about US$66 million last year.

Pitt and Aniston bought the 1115sqm house built in the 1930s for about US$13 million in 2001 and sold it to hedge fund executive Jonathan Brooks after splitting in 2005.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt had lived in the home for about three years.

Wallace Neff, known for developing a signature “California Style”, designed the property in the 1930s for actor Fredric March and wife Florence Eldrige.

March was one of the most celebrated actors of the 1930s and 1940s and won the Academy Award of Best Actor in 1931 for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Enlisting Neff’s services to design the home would have required considerable resources — the architect is also the famous name behind a five-bedroom guesthouse on a Los Angeles property recently listed for US$245 million.

Following March’s tenure as owner, the Beverly Hills property was later owned by philanthropist Wallis Annenberg, who sold it to entertainment lawyer Ken Ziffren.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are believed to have lived in the home for about three years.

The current seller added a championship tennis court with a pavilion and a separate guest loft.

The French Normandy Revival property has an octagonal tower, four bedrooms, a gym, a dining room with seating for up to 20 people, a bar room and a large swimming pool.

James Packer bought the home next door. His home had previously be owned by actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman for about 20 years before the couple sold it in 2015 to a developer for US$29 million.

Like the home formerly owned by Pitt and Aniston, Mr Packer’s new home is filled with surprises.
