A man who shot a former reality television contestant in a Gold Coast car park has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for attempted murder.

  • Soong's lawyer told the court he had not intended to kill or seriously injure anyone
  • Justice Martin Burns said Soong's prospects for rehabilitation were "bleak"
  • He described Soong as dangerous and capable of extreme violence

The "possessive and jealous" Anthony Yoon Sun Soong mistakenly believed former reality television contestant Sam Wallace was his ex-lover's new partner when he opened fire in December 2015, the Supreme Court in Brisbane heard.

Shots were fired into the car Mr Wallace was driving, with a bullet becoming lodged in his left thigh.

Soong then walked up to the Jeep and pulled the trigger at close range, but it did not go off.

After the misfire, Soong then pistol whipped Mr Wallace with the butt of the gun.

The 26-year-old was found guilty of attempted murder in February and sentenced today.

His defence lawyer had argued he did not intend to kill or seriously injure anyone.

In sentencing, Justice Martin Burns said the attack was planned and involved the use of a gun.

"This was not a spontaneous act, it was carried out with great deliberation and as though you were a law unto yourself," he said.

"You attempted to kill someone you did not know … someone who was in a defenceless position."

Justice Burns said Soong had a history of alcohol and drug abuse and a troubled upbringing.

Justice Burns said Soong's prospects for rehabilitation were "bleak".

"You are a singularly dangerous individual capable of extreme violence," he said.

Soong had a large group of supporters in court who said "love you brother" as he was led away.
