“You get to see the whole kind of seasonal weather, like the big storms that come in from the coast and then in autumn and winter sometimes, you wake up in the mist and the fog.”

The 1182sq m property is set above a stretch of the Barwon that Ms Birtles describes as a living piece of art.

The Covid pandemic brought the family to Montrose Place, but now that adult children have graduated and moved out, leaving the
three-storey residence as a very large empty nest.

Ms Birtles says the house needs a family to enjoy the home with high, square-set ceilings and much glass, particularly facing the northeast and draws of loads of natural light.

“The thing that I love the most is the peace and serenity. It feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere because you’ve only really got two neighbours and you don’t see them from the house. And then you look down over the river, over to Geelong and over the bay to Melbourne.”

“You can have loads of people there, and it doesn’t feel like it,” she says.

While it’s a great place to hide from the world, time hasn’t stood still, with new wool carpets installed, along with curtains, while the main floor was repainted in preparation for the engagement party held last month.

The house offers a private resort feel, amid a mature, but low-maintenance garden.
