Major religions have a lot to say about wealth, and much of it is cautionary.

For instance, the Christian Bible says love of money is the root of all evil. The Qu'ran tells Muslims to give regularly to charity. And the Tanakh tells Jews that one who loves money will never be satisfied.

But there are plenty of differences among Judaism, Christianity and Islam, three of the world's major religions, about how religion and wealth should interact.

Some religious leaders lead openly luxurious lives, while others argue that living modestly brings them closer to their God.

And many believe it's what you do with wealth that matters.

Jewish stereotypes about money

Over centuries, many Jews have had to face a "cruel stereotype" of having an excessive amount of wealth and greed, says Rabbi Ralph Genende, senior rabbi at Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, and principal rabbi to the Australian Defence Force.

"[It's] as old as Judaism itself," he says.

"It gained traction in Medieval times when Jews were barred from most professions, but allowed to be money lenders."

They "were damned for being successful at it", Rabbi Genende says.

For example, in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, a Jewish character named Shylock was depicted as a greedy money lender.

But the Torah — the first five books of the Hebrew Bible —  instructs its followers to be humble when it comes to money.

"Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud," it states.

That's not to say wealth is discouraged in Judaism.

"It's how you use [money] that makes it moral, amoral or immoral," Rabbi Genende says.

Giving 'tzedakah'

Rabbi Genende spells out what moral or immoral wealth might look like in the Jewish faith.

According to Jewish law, if you are wealthy, there is an obligation to share your wealth with those who are in need. It's a concept also found in Islam.
