The 7 Tannery Lane, Mandurang, residence was built by owner-builder Phil McKern as his “dream home” and the first property he had ever built for himself in his 35 years in the industry.

But one of the more unique features is the grassy ramp leading up from the driveway beside the four-car basement garage to a lush landing with access to the main house.

McKern says he engaged local architectural firm Bree Architects to bring his vision for the luxe home to life.

“The idea is that the grass ramp makes the house blend into the natural environment behind the house,” he says.

“Looking at the house from the road you see the grass ramp going up to the house made of natural materials with the bushland behind … I ride my ride-on mower up it.”

After the build’s completion in 2018, McKern spent the past five years enjoying everything the four-bedroom house had to offer, including hosting numerous parties and family gatherings with more than 50 guests at a time.

“Everything I dreamt of was put into the house,” he says.

Now a semi-retired, empty nester, McKern has put the property on the market with a $3.4m-$3.6m asking price.

“I’m so proud of what was accomplished, but it’s time for the next chapter,” he adds.

“I feel a little sad … but also very proud to be able to say ‘I built that’.”
