One of Australia’s most respected and influential buyer’s advocacy groups has declared a blanket boycott on Victoria until the government stops treating investors “like drug dealers”.

Propertyology boss Simon Pressley announced his firm, which is based in Brisbane but provides investment advice nationwide and has thrice been named Australia’s best buyer’s agency, would no longer recommend any Victorian towns or suburbs to investors.

“We were hoping that they were going to change their attitude by now,” Mr Pressley said.

“But we have got the message and we’re out.

“Investors are role models, and they are being treated like drug dealers.”

He said his firm was not alone, and the state government would need to walk back derogatory language aimed at property investors by former Premier Daniel Andrews, as well as institute policy changes to show support for investors before they would recommend the state to buyers again.

Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Quentin Kilian said while he sympathised, he would prefer there wouldn’t be a boycott.

“This has been our big fear … that they (the government) are pushing away investors, not incentivising them to come here,” Mr Kilian said.

“And without investors you don’t have rental properties.”

He added that with multiple REIA award wins as the nations top buyer’s advocacy agency, Propertyology had credibility and their views were concerning.

“I understand their frustrations, but we really do need investors here and we really do need rental properties available,” Mr Kilian said.
