Hot Malabar Auction

Sisters Ann and Sandra have sold their 97 year old mother’s home for $5.1m.

A pair of sisters have sold their mother’s rundown Malabar house for a whopping $5.1 million, $600,000 over the reserve.

Having been in their family since 1958, three generations watched on the sidelines to say goodbye to “nanna’s house” at 136 Prince Edward St, including sisters Ann and Sandra.

“You look emotional,” Sandra could be heard saying to her daughter Liz, who appeared teary after the auction.

“I am emotional,” Liz said. “It was really stressful leading up to it and then it’s all over in a few minutes.”

The auction was quick and hotly contested, with a crowd of around 100 locals and 12 registered bidders.

“Some people really wanted it”, Sandra said.

Although happy with the final result, Sandra said it was quite “nasty” how they came to sell her 97 year old mother, Betty’s house.

“She was really forced out of the home as they cut off her centrelink because the asset was too much.”

Betty lived in the home after it was built until recently moving into a nursing home.

The land was acquired in 1958 and the home built circa 1960. Pictured is owner Betty Stuart and her two daughters Ann and Sandra.

“We had to explain to her that she wasn’t coming back to her home,” Sandra said.

Growing up in the home, the sisters said there was no road or sewerage when they first moved there.

“It was crown land and dad went in a ballot and won, and then we built a little house,” Ann said. “It’s exactly how it was when we all grew up in it.”

A local inspecting the house before the auction said it was like “stepping into a time warp.”

The family found an old photo not long after the home was built where the Royal Yacht Britannia had passed by the home in 1963 during the Queen’s visit.

Ms Lamaro said she felt for the agents, and was grateful for how hard they worked to get the result.

“They left no stone unturned,” she said.

Conor Howard, lead agent from NGFarah, said the final bid was a shock even to him.

“We were guiding $4m, with such high interest we were expecting it to go above that but not that high,”

Three of the registered bidders were locals to Malabar, three from surrounding suburbs and the remaining were developers.

Facing Randwick Golf Club, the uninterrupted water views of Long Bay was what drew such interest to the property, including the winning bidder, Mr Howard revealed.

“The best part about the result today is that he plans to build a great home for his family,” he said about the winning bidder.

Auctioneer Damien Cooley managed to convince the winning bidder to raise his own bid from $5.05m to $5.1m – meaning he effectively bid against himself.

“The opening bid at $4.3m was quite high I thought, and then it was face-paced, an outstanding result,” Mr Cooley said.

Mr Cooley said that now was a great time to sell and he thought November wouldn’t see as many auctions.

“I think a lot of people sit back and think whether they should sell now, I think its an opportunistic time to come on the market,” he said.

Nearly 800 homes went to auction in Sydney this week.

In Sydney’s western suburbs, a popular home in Greenfield Park sold under the hammer for $1.332m.

The home at 28 Ashur Cres drew a huge crowd and had 27 bidders, with seven active.

A young couple purchasing their first home came out on top.

Lead agent, Marcus Biasetto said the property ticked a lot of boxes for people.

“A majority of our buyers were families as it was a five-bedroom, single-level home,” Mr Biasetto said.

The sellers had lived in the home for 37 years and were looking forward to downsizing and moving closer to their family.

In Sydney’s south, a dated brick home in Kogarah Bay has sold under the hammer for $600,000 over reserve at $3.1m.

The home at 22 Wharf Rd had seven registered bidders.

Listing agent Trent Tarbey from McGrath San Souci said the large block of land was drawing the interest to the property.

The bidding opened at $2.3m, and a family from Wattle Grove intending to build their dream home on the block came out on top with the winning bid.

A home in the north west has sold for $2.14m, $290,000 over reserve.

A full cul-de-sac of bidders, neighbours and market-watchers attended the Hills Shire’s first auction of the day.

The home was listed by Shiv Nair from Ray White TNG Glenwood who said the suburb was very popular at the moment.

“We set a new suburb record for single-storey property in the area,” he said.

The opening bid was $1.7m, and the $1.85m reserve was hit 3 bids later, each of them were strong, $50,000 increments, said auctioneer Stu Benson.

The winning bidders are a young family who had just sold a duplex locally, and loved the home’s single level configuration, and its premium location.
