Hawthorn Football Club chief financial officer Hugh Hogan punted his two-bedroom unit on Saturday in a hot auction where one of the club’s players missed out on the keys.

Mr Hogan and his brother, James, purchased the 5/2 Henrietta St, Hawthorn, pad in 2016, living there together for five years before renting it out recently.

“I loved the access to all the cafes and restaurants on Glenferrie Rd and easy tram ride into the MCG for the footy,” he said.

The Tuscan-inspired apartment complex is conveniently located on the corner of Henrietta St and Glenferrie Rd, just a stone’s throw away from the train station and the bustling Glenferrie food and cultural hub.

Five buyers competed for the ground-floor apartment at its afternoon auction, including someone bidding on behalf of an anonymous Hawthorn footballer who came out as the underbidder.

A single female buyer placed the winning offer of $770,000, gifting Mr Hogan and his brother an $80,000 bonus on the $690,000 reserve.

The pair were selling after purchasing houses with their respective partners over the past couple of years, with public records showing the unit had been rented for $500 a week since last August.

“(We) felt it was the right time to sell up,” Mr Hogan said. The Hawks’ finance manager engaged The Agency, an official real estate partner of the football club, to handle the sale. Partner Luke Saville was at the helm and said the property had been popular over its campaign among downsizers and younger first-home buyers.

The main bedroom also comes with a spacious walk-in wardrobe with access to a stylish bathroom complete with a European laundry.

There’s also an additional communal courtyard and garden as part of the complex. The 96sq m pad was initially listed with a $640,000-$680,000 price tag.

And Mr Hogan isn’t the only Hawthorn staffer making moves in the property market.

The sale comes after the club’s director, REA boss Owen Wilson recently sold his Toorak mansion after it was listed in February with a $16m-$17m asking price.

While the sale price of the 25 Linlithgow Rd house is undisclosed, it is understood to have sold for about $15m.
