Former Test cricketer Shane Watson looked at Kylie Minogue and Michael Hutchence’s “love nest” ahead of its sale at auction.

The apartment in the iconic Connaught building at 2407/187 Liverpool St, Sydney fetched $3,405,000, a record for a two-bedroom unit in the complex, via Ayre Real Estate agents Brody O’Brien and Adrian Wilson who had a $3.3m guide.

Hutchence is known to have lived in the apartment with Minogue on level 27 — just two floors below the communal rooftop pool — between 1989 and 1991. The INXS star

was found dead in his room at Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Double Bay in November 1997.

When contacted, O’Brien wouldn’t reveal who bought the apartment, citing confidentiality agreements.

Though other sources revealed that even though Watson and his wife, Lee, were interested, the purchasers were “a couple of guys”.

It’s likely that Watson and his wife were considering the Connaught apartment as an investment, since they’re happily entrenched in a Bellevue Hill residence bought for $6,825,000 in 2018. They’d sold a Bronte home for $10.6m six months before.

Despite there being significant interest in the apartment both before and after the auction, there was just one registered party on the night so the auctioneer and agents negotiated directly with that bidder.

“The vendors wanted to sell the property under auction conditions,” O’Brien said.

Ahead of the sale, the current owners, director of AusMed Innovations Gavin Holland and his partner, Kelly McNamara, who owns the Longevity Lounge in Double Bay, told the Wentworth Courier that Hutchence and Minogue had wild parties at the apartment.

“I know that back in those days there was a lot of socialising that went on, for want of a better word,” says Holland.

“In this building, there’ve been suicides, murders, famous and infamous people — all sorts of stuff.

In the Mystify documentary of 2019, Minogue said her two-year relationship with the INXS star, who was found dead in his room at Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Double Bay in November 1997, “felt loving” but “was probably doomed” from the start.

She also said that the relationship “opened up a whole new world”.

Holland and McNamara bought the apartment for $3.1m in 2021 but are now planning to move to the northern beaches to be closer to Holland’s children.

But Holland said they were going to miss the view.

“Kylie and Michael would have enjoyed socialising on the balcony and New Year’s Eve as well,” he said.
