A Sydney mansion that was never lived in since a major renovation – because the owners didn’t like it anymore – has sold for more than $19m.

A Mosman mansion that hasn’t been lived in since being completely renovated has sold for more than $19m after its owners changed their mind about living north of the harbour bridge.

The Liu family, from China, bought 35 Mandalong Rd in 2019 for $8.6m and set about a no expense spared refurb with bedrooms the size of small apartments, windows imported from Spain and marble from Italy.

Their son had a hand in the design and gave himself a vast bedroom with projector screen and a huge gaming room. But in the end the family didn’t move in and instead the son moved to the city.

The six-bedroom house, designed by Roar architects and built by Mardini Constructions, came to market before Christmas with a $20m guide and after 146 days on market has sold to a local family for more than $19m.

Sabrina Gao, of Ray White Lower North Shore, said the sale is a street record and buyers loved the sheer size of the house with its sweeping views and pool plus the six-car showroom garage and three car spaces in the courtyard.

“The market above $13m is moving very fast,” she said.

“Mosman is fast becoming the new Eastern suburbs.”

According to PropTrack, the median house price in Mosman, on Sydney’s North Shore, is $5,387,500. That’s up 9.9 per cent over the past 12 months.
