McGrath auctioneer David McGuinness calls for bids at the auction.
Negotiations to sell a renovated Victorian era home in central Geelong took on an international flavour after the property was passed in at auction.
Buyers of the circa-1893 home, extended to become a four-bedroom residence at 128 Gheringhap St, are relocating from Switzerland, while the vendors had already moved to Scotland, McGrath, Geelong agent David McGuinness said.
The duty fell to Mr McGuinness to negotiate between the parties after bidding on the home stalled at $990,000 and the property, within view of GMHBA Stadium when bidding, was passed in.

Mr McGuinness said while the bidder was Swiss, his wife, who skipped the calling of the auction, grew up in Geelong and was taking up a position with a major CBD employer after returning from Zurich.

The double-fronted Victorian era house is typical for Geelong.
High ceilings in the original portion of the residence are continued in the modern extension, were the raked architectural feature creates a grand open-plan living, dining and kitchen area.
Glass stacking doors are peeled back to open the living space onto a rear deck, which steps down to a courtyard and huge rear carport that’s accessed through a side laneway.

Mr McGuinness said the flexible floorplan meant one of the bedrooms could be converted to become a second living space.
But he said purchasers would be buying a wonderful lifestyle, with all the amenities Geelong is renowned for close by.
“We can see the light towers, we can see Kardinia Park actually from where we’re standing.

“We’ve got the waterfront and the CBD just over the top of the hill. We’ve got Moorabool St one way and we’ve got Pakington St the other way. Position here is absolutely perfect.”
Meanwhile, a young family exclaimed they’re officially becoming Geelong residents after securing a four-bedroom clinker brick house at 30 Warwick St, Newtown.
McGrath, Geelong agent Jim Cross said four parties were keen on the 530sq m property near Geelong College junior school and Newtown and Chilwell Football Club at Elderslie Reserve.

However just two were able to bid as the price quickly accelerated past the top end of the $1.1m to $1.2m quoted range.

The buyers were a young family with a couple of kids, which was the demographic representing all interest on the home.
“They were a family with two kids and wanted to get into the school area there an they just wanted to get into a nice family home in Newtown at a reasonably affordable price.
“It’s pretty close all the action so it’s good little spot and yeah, just sort of ticked all the boxes.”
